As a fan, I lost the chance to watch a great match up last night between the Lakers & the Nuggets. From the start of the game, the Nuggets got off to a great start, however the action was quickly halted by various unseen foul calls in the favor of the Lakers & no calls at the Nuggets expense! This match was clearly determined by the officiating crew. It is at point where it is no longer a fair competition between two teams. I can honestly say that either there is an unfair home court advantage or the gambling ring still exists...

Sincerely,
A Disappointed Fan

Obviously you are a Nuggets fan.
While I did not see the game - I can catagorically state that you are wrong.
As an Official at the DIII College level and having worked very hard to get there, I can tell you it just doesn't happen like that.
As often as these guys are reviewed and graded on their game calling abilities - it just doesn't happen.
You have the right as a fan to not like the officiating but to make blanket statements about the ability of professionals who do their job with no regard for who wins every night, they just love the game and their jobs, shows the true fanatisim you have for your team. As well as a lack of understnading of officiating in general.
It would do you better to actually learn not only the rules of the game but the theory of the calls and how they are made, so you can better understand the game and be a better fan of the game, than to say the ref's sucked because you didn't like the calls, and your team lost.
Maybe the Nuggets Players were gambling on the game.
The fact that the Lakers bench out scored the Nuggets bench 44 - 34 and that A. Carter played 31 minutes and didn't score (8 ppg Average), C. Anthony was held 12 points under his average in the game might have had something to do with it. The fouls were 27 - 21 in count which is not out of line.
Do not disparrage people for doing their job without stating all the facts,
your team lost the game by 17 points, two of your players (which covers that spread) didn't play up to their standard. Accept the fact and move on!

It happens alright, and I'm tired of it. I've seen it too many times in too many important games. Fans in the crowd are better at officiating than the refs. I've seen a ref standing right there see a play and make the wrong call with everyone yelling the correct call. How is it that people paying to watch the game make more correct calls than the refs who are paid to call the games.

Game 5 between the Lakers and Jazz was one of the top 5 worst officiated games that I've ever witnessed (and there have been a lot). This was disgusting. I'm searching through websites trying to find someone to complain to about it and I guess this is the closest thing there is out there. Beyond your "upholding ethics and enhancing fairplay" bull-crap - where is the part where the NBA is trying to make some extra coin and the referees are their enforcers on the court. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. There should be some kind of fine or penalty for this kind of blatent crap.

Lakers vs Jazz = FIX!

If the NBA officials are scrutinized so much, how can Steve Javie, Bob Delaney, and Tom Washington ever officiate again in the NBA? Does that scrutiny come with any consequences? Apparently not. There are those who believe that the NBA uses officials to control the outcomes of games in order to maximize financial gains for the league (not to mention that for every 7 game series, there's probably an extra paycheck in it for the officials). Hey, if I knew that I could get an extra paycheck if the outcome went a certain way, I'd probably do my best to help that occur, too. Although the conspiracy theory is a compelling one, perhaps the saying "never assume a conspiracy when incompetence is a more likely explanation" makes more sense. Whatever the reason, the bias demonstrated by Javie, Delaney, and Washington in Game 5 last night in LA was pathetic and insulting to every intelligent person watching the game. Here's an idea, as soon as Congress gets done investigating steriods in Baseball, video-cheating in Football, how 'bout they check into the corruption in NBA officiating. Just because Tim Donaghy is serving 25 years doesn't mean the rest of the NBA officials are clean. Who better to investigate corruption that those who understand it best? Until NBA officials check their gigantic egos at the door of the arena and develop the courage to make decisions that, although unpopular, are CORRECT; the NBA reduces itself to nothing more than the sham of Pro-Wrestling. Shame on all of you NBA refs for thinking that professional basketball was your springboard you to fame and fortune. Do any of you have any integrity at all?

if it offends your sensibilities so much, then go watch a different sport... or better yet, get up off the couch and go running, enjoy the outdoors, or spend time with your family. no one is forcing you to watch.

these diatribes are simply unconvincing, although always a bit comical.

if i'm reading celticsman's message right, which is a bit of guess since he doesn't seem to know how to spell or compose a sentence, he's upset with a call against paul pierce toward the end of last night's game. i didn't care for the call either, but as a fellow celtics fan, i guess i'm a little more inclined to place the blame on our team, which, regardless of a single call made in any of the playoff games this year, has been unable to put a team away while playing on the road. we played really well on the road all season, yet if we lose in the postseason, we have only ourselves to blame. to the rest of the nba world: sorry we let celticsman out of the pen. he doesn't speak for all of us in beantown, i promise.

C'mon, how can you say that call against Paul Pierce wasn't a changing moment in the game? The game was within 3 points at that time and Boston had momentum to squeeze out a win. Even LeBron James' post game interview implied that he felt the call was just an out of bounds off LeBron and not a charge. If the guy that supposedly TOOK the charge doesn't feel it was a charge, how can anyone else feel differently? The refs in that game made sure that there would be no road win for Boston and that the series was going to a game 7. I'm convinced the refs get paid per game and it's in their best interest to extend a 7 game series. The officiating in that game was, by far, the worst I've seen in my 35+ years of watching the NBA. All of the post game commentators also felt the same way.

Read the post: what I said was, "I didn't care for the call." At the same time, the point was to say that the Celtics haven't mustered a road win yet--and it wasn't simply because of one bad call. If you watch the highlights from the game, one might wonder why the Celtics did such a poor defensive job on LeBron James--wasn't that, as much as Joe Forte's call in the homestretch, if not more, to blame for the Celtics' loss?

Perhaps the words of Paul Pierce say it best (from the Boston Globe):
* The Celtics missed their last nine shots of the half and 12 of 18 in the quarter. "We just didn't make the extra pass," Pierce said. "We turned the ball over." [Oh, so it was poor shooting, bad passing, and turnovers that led to the loss...]
* But Pierce was called for a questionable offensive foul with 49.9 seconds remaining while being guarded by James... "It's just the breaks of the game," said Pierce about the foul. "You have no control over it. I thought I got fouled on it. But the refs saw it differently. You have to move on." [Classy guy, that Paul Pierce.]

The NBA pays referees on salary during the regular season, and in the post season they are paid a set dollar figure for each round worked. The reason the league does this is for exactly the reason that you state as a concern: if referees were paid on a per-game basis, they might be more inclined to make calls that could result in their getting additional games.

If the officiating is so bad and it causes "Frustrated Fan" such pain, then perhaps he/she should stop watching the NBA. If it isn't as bad as that, then just stop griping.

Oh, and things all worked out in the end. The Celtics won today, which pleases me greatly. Now let's just hope they can figure out how to win on the road--if they don't, though, I'm sure someone will take the time to tell us how it's the refs' fault.
