Flopping Question for the Refs
Body:
Posted By n/a on 05/12/2008 10:42 AM Let's remember a few things: flopping has been around FOREVER in the NBA. Doug Collins, Bill Laimbeer, and others perfected this art long before the current crop of players did. Also, keep in mind that referees are on-floor interpreters of the rules, and the current crop of officials does a fairly good job parsing out interpretations of these rules. One announcer acknowledged as much lately when he said that a particular flop play had been called correctly. BUT, at the same time, he didn't like the rule that allowed the call to be made, and he said it may be time for the league to institute a rule that disallows the most egregious flops. Until that happens, however, criticism should be directed toward the league office--and the coaches on the rules committee who refuse to enact such a rule--and not the on-floor officials, whose actions are consistent with what the league rules tell them to do.
