To NBA Referees: I know you all review NBA games on a consistent basis. And I know you all must pick up on the savvier players (Iverson, Ginobili, Bryant, etc) who use questionable tactics to gain an advantage on their opposing player. But for the life of me I will never understand how you all continue to be "suckered" into blowing your whistle when a player embellishes contact by flopping. And do you not know the most well-knowned floppers are: 1. Manu Ginobili 2. Anderson Varajao (unsigned this year) 3. Mehmet Okur 4. Allen Iverson 5. Devin Harris 6. Fabricio Oberto 7. Brad Miller 8. Reggie Evans 9. Carlos Arroyo 10. Andres Nocioni Any chance that when these aforementioned players fall to the floor acting like they have been shot in the head by a sniper that your whistle does not need to be blown? You all can't be that gullible? |

| H-Town, I could not agree with you more. FAR too many games have been decided by a call handed to a flopper, and your list is dead-on in identifying the most prominent (notorious, perhaps?) actors in the NBA today. I realize the NBA is an entertainment medium, but the referees absolutely must begin to hold the whistle; otherwise, the NBA will continue to evolve into a circus act. |

Let's remember a few things: flopping has been around FOREVER in the NBA. Doug Collins, Bill Laimbeer, and others perfected this art long before the current crop of players did.
Also, keep in mind that referees are on-floor interpreters of the rules, and the current crop of officials does a fairly good job parsing out interpretations of these rules. One announcer acknowledged as much lately when he said that a particular flop play had been called correctly. BUT, at the same time, he didn't like the rule that allowed the call to be made, and he said it may be time for the league to institute a rule that disallows the most egregious flops. Until that happens, however, criticism should be directed toward the league office--and the coaches on the rules committee who refuse to enact such a rule--and not the on-floor officials, whose actions are consistent with what the league rules tell them to do. |
